(Bay Area Compass; 2013)
While the entire blogosphere was stroking off a bearded wayfarer living on Jay-Z's futon, DJ Fresh and The Alchemist found themselves in a dead heat for album of the year honors. After a rough patch of underwhelming collaborations with Reakwon and Casual, the world's freshest DJ appears to have righted the ship with Mitchy Slick's phenomenal soundtrack to the summer, Feet Match The Paint. Next up for Fresh is another addition to his Tonight Show series starring Mac Mall. The project is tentatively titled Bay Area Compass, and scheduled to be released in early September. Their first single, "As The Sun Rotates," repurposes ZZ Top's "Cheap Sunglasses" by way of EPMD's "You're a Customer." Here, DJ Fresh employs Harry Fraud's gimmicky crutch to much greater effect. Probably because he's making an effort to produce something that sounds great in our cars, opposed to what he assumes Hot 97 program directors think sounds great in our cars.
