MIGUEL: Pussy Is Mine

(Kaleidoscope Dream; 2012)
Miguel's contribution to the obligatory jukebox bid bundled with Life Is Good was met with jeers and hisses. Most of the criticism was just the typical knee jerk reaction Nas' frivolous efforts tend to garner, regardless of quality. However, there was one particular gripe pertaining to his choice in sequencing that had merit. The most exhausting song on Life Is Good leads directly into the jovial 'Summer On Smash'. Miguel's sophomore album, Kaleidoscope Dream, contains a similarly abrupt transition between 'Pussy Is Mine' and 'Candles In The Sun'. Miguel bridges the most raunchy and pensive moments of the record with a clever interlude no longer than ten seconds. His studio engineer, at once frustrated and amused by his client's antics, demands that Miguel record something more serious. Individually, both songs are excellent. But the attention to detail provides the contrasting line items meaning within the context of the album. It's just one of the many nuances that make Kaleidoscope Dream feel like such a complete piece of work.
