40th Greatest Rap Song of 2010

Curren$y: Breakfast
Written by Deen from It Was Posted

Breakfast is one of the rare instances in which you hear both the original and new/alternate version of a song without getting upset at either.  Usually, unless a change involves mastering a leak, a new guest or an official remix, updates tend to ruin songs (Drake's "Fireworks" anyone?).  In any case, "Breakfast" encapsulates most of the appeal about Curren$y - one hookless, sprawling verse with random references to everything from Yancey Thigpen and Gold-diggers to X-box and the Karate Kid, over a smooth Bossa Nova influenced backdrop (in both versions) provided by Mos Def.  You probably take rap a little too seriously if you can't fuck with that.

  5. Yeah Ski's update is a lot better, Mos' original sounds a bit soulless in comparison.
